"Dharma" creator to write CBS comedy pilot

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - "Dharma & Greg" creator Chuck Lorre has started work on his next project: a romantic comedy for CBS. 

The show, tentatively titled "Two Families," will revolve around a recently widowed man and woman in their late 40s or early 50s who begin a romance together. The two will try to balance their attempt at a relationship and the needs of their highly dysfunctional children. It is being developed for fall 2002. 

"The series is really about how love can heal both themselves and their family," Lorre told Daily Variety. "It's also about the courtship and the romance and the obstacles they face. It's first and foremost a love story." 

Lorre is particularly excited to be developing a project that doesn't revolve around folks smack dab in the middle of the advertiser-friendly 18- to 49-year-old demographic. 

"It's hard to do that these days," Lorre said, noting that he had originally hoped to make the characters even older. 

Most recently, Lorre developed "Nathan's Choice," an interactive comedy that had been planned as a midseason replacement for Fox, which ultimately decided not to go forward with the project. 

In addition to creating and executive producing "Dharma" -- about to celebrate its 100th episode on ABC -- Lorre created "Grace Under Fire" and "Cybill." He was also a scribe on the Emmy-winning "Roseanne."
